With support from the Eastern Illinois University Newman Catholic Center, Hedwig opened in 2011 in a three-story brick house at 227 Jackson Ave. in Charleston. Besides St. Hedwig’s  there are two other houses that are part of the Catholic Worker Community. They are called Tolton House and Dorothy Day House.  We are part of a Catholic worker movement that has more than 200 Catholic Worker Communities in North America and Europe. Each coomunity chooses its own focus, and local organizers saw a need to serve women and children.

Saint Hedwig is the namesake and patron saint of the household.
